Five new players make their start for England in a 65-run loss. Rocky Flintoff is one of them.

England U19 229 (Thain 58, Benkenstein 51) lost by 65 runs to Sri Lanka U19 294 for 6 (Perera 58, Shanmuganathan 57, Abeywickrama Singha 52).

England Under-19s lost by 65 runs in the first of three one-day internationals against Sri Lanka (Reddy Anna Book), even though Noah Thain and Luc Benkenstein of Essex put together a score of 90 for the fourth wicket on home soil at Chelmsford.

Benkenstein was the more flashy, hitting two sixes in his 51 from 50 balls. Thain, on the other hand, held the innings together with six fours in his 58 from 69 balls. But after 16 overs of partnership, Thain and his leader were out eight balls apart. England had a tough job ahead of them to reach 295 runs and win in 50 overs. With 27 balls not used, they fell far short.

Sri Lanka's score of 294 for 6 was helped by three different fifty scores from the middle order. It only took Sharujan Shanmuganathan 75 balls to get to 57, and it took Mahith Perera 60 balls to get to 58. Dinura Kalupahana hit 52 off of just 37 balls.

England was on track to score at a rate of just under six an over after six overs when Vihas Thewmika and Thisara Ekanayake, two off-spin bowlers for Sri Lanka, bowled six balls and got rid of their openers. One stayed low and bowled at Freddie McCann. Keshana Fonseka, who had hit five fours in his 25 runs, chipped to short third man.

Noah Thain, another Essex player, had been getting more attention than Charlie Allison. Allison tried to make things right by hitting Thisara straight out of the ground, but he was caught on the boundary for eight runs off twenty balls. The second all-Essex pair worked better. Benkenstein hit sixes over midwicket and long off, and then he hit a classic cover drive for four. Benkenstein tried to hit another big shot two balls after hitting fifty, but Hivin Kenula caught him on the midwicket boundary.

After that, Praveen Maneesha destroyed England's batting in just seven deliveries by getting Thain to play around one and Haydon Mustard to hit it late on another. When Hivin tried to hit mid-off, he got Rocky Flintoff out. Rocky is the 16-year-old son of Freddie Flintoff. Farhan Ahmed played two balls before throwing the ball back to Vihas Thewmika. Harry Moore played bravely for 26 runs before getting bowled by Vihas. Noah Cornwell was then bowled to end the game.

Cornwell from Middlesex took 3 for 54 in his first ODI. He got rid of Sri Lanka's openers in the first over after England won the toss and put the guests in on a green-tinged wicket with variable bounce. In the last over, Pulindu Perera hit Harry Moore, another fast bowler, over the wicket keeper's head for six, but he was caught when he edged an inswinger to first slip. Thisara then came after Cornwell and roughly pulled him to short fine leg.

Thain killed Gayana Weerasinghe, the third Sri Lankan, when he hooked into deep square leg's hands. This put England ahead. Dinura led the counterattack and scored 34 of the first fifty runs in a 73-run stand with Sharujan at the fourth wicket. He also hit McCann over midwicket for six. But he left just short of fifty, playing down the wrong line to be caught lbw by Benkenstein.

Dinura was faster than Sharujan, but Sharujan sped up the single that got him to fifty off 64 balls. He did help Mahith add 67 runs for the fifth wicket, but he was out seven runs later when he swept the cheap off-spinner Farhan Ahmed to short fine leg. In the last 10 overs, Mahith and Diniru put on a show. Mahith hit Cornwell for a single, which was his fifty from 55 balls. Moore was hit over square leg by Niru for a second six, and he then made 50 from just 34 balls. He was bowled out by Cornwell's third ball, which was the second-to-last ball of the game.
